The total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, which will cross the Iberian Peninsula from Galicia to the Balearic Islands, has ignited the flame of astrotourism in rural Spain, generating a veritable “tourism fever” among domestic and international travelers. According to recent data from Airbnb, searches for accommodation in locations along the path of the eclipse have increased by 830%, reflecting a growing demand for authentic experiences and nights under starry skies.
This astronomical phenomenon, the first visible on Spanish soil in a century, is part of what is already being called the “Iberian Eclipse Trio,” which will also include similar phenomena in 2027 and 2028. The zone of totality for this 2026 eclipse covers large regions such as Aragon, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands, where an exceptional influx of visitors is expected.
Airbnb and the Starlight Foundation: a partnership for stargazing tourism
Recognizing the transformative potential of the eclipse, Airbnb has partnered with the Starlight Foundation with a $35,000 donation through its Community Fund. This support will go toward strengthening sustainable tourism, particularly by training rural hosts in astro-tourism, creating experiences linked to the night sky and the eclipse, and promoting best practices in rural areas.
We at the Starlight Foundation are grateful for this strategic alliance with Airbnb, which recognises and reinforces the role of our skies as a heritage resource and driver of development in areas where conventional tourism is limited.
An opportunity for 'invisible Spain'
This eclipse offers rural areas that often go unnoticed a window of international exposure. It is a historic opportunity to establish astro-tourism as a means of economic diversification by capitalising on this unique astronomical phenomenon. We encourage destinations, accommodation services and local communities to prepare proposals that align with responsible celestial observation.
