Starlight Foundation Presents the First Guide for the Development of Astro-Tourism at the United Nations
Antonia Varela, Director of the Starlight Foundation, took part in the 123rd Executive Council of UN Tourism to present this pioneering guide that defines the key principles of star tourism as a sustainable development tool.
The Starlight Foundation has taken another major step in promoting astro-tourism on the international stage with the official launch of the first-ever Guide for the Development of Astro-Tourism. This publication lays the groundwork for consolidating this form of tourism worldwide. The Starlight Foundation participated in the 123rd Executive Council of UN Tourism, held in Segovia from May 29 to 30, 2025. As part of the official program, the Commission on Matters of Affiliate Members (CMAM) convened a special session in which the guide was officially introduced.
This marks the first time a guide of this kind has been presented to an international body like UN Tourism—a milestone for the Starlight Foundation and for all territories and professionals committed to protecting the night sky and promoting scientific outreach through tourism.
The guide outlines best practices, key resources, essential infrastructure, specialized marketing strategies, experience design, training, and technological tools, all fundamental elements to foster responsible tourism connected to astronomical observation.
During her presentation, Antonia Varela emphasized that astro-tourism “is not only a way to diversify and reduce seasonality in tourism offerings, but also a real opportunity for rural and protected areas seeking sustainable growth.”
This guide was developed by the Starlight Foundation with the support of UN Tourism and was sponsored in collaboration with the Cabildo of Tenerife and the Cabildo of La Palma. It also received the cooperation of Mexico, Jordan, Argentina, and Colombia, which are featured as case studies and astro-tourism destination models in the official launch, alongside a broad group of experts in the field. The objective: to provide a comprehensive framework for fostering astro-tourism.
Astro-Tourism and Its Global ImpactIn addition to Varela’s presentation, the event also included the latest data from the platform Tripadvisor, including statistics related to star tourism. According to recent reports, interest in astro-tourism has increased globally by 320% since 2022. Meanwhile, Booking.com estimates that 58% of global travelers are interested in participating in astronomical activities during their trips. These numbers reflect the growing appeal of tourism linked to the night sky, science, and the wonder of discovering the universe.
These figures are in line with those provided by Astroadvisor, a tool developed by the Starlight Foundation earlier this year that helps users find certified, responsible astro-tourism destinations and experiences.
Leadership in Scientific TourismThe Starlight Foundation currently leads the UN Tourism Working Group on Scientific Tourism, an international forum promoting initiatives that integrate science as a value-added element in tourism. The presentation of this guide is another step in that direction, positioning the night sky as a top-tier natural, cultural, and economic resource.
The Starlight Foundation extends its gratitude to UN Tourism for its support and reaffirms its commitment to continuing to promote astro-tourism as a driver of sustainable development and a bridge between science, culture, and nature worldwide.
