Starlight Foundation Director Antonia Varela attended the 122nd Meeting of Affiliate Members of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
The Starlight Foundation continues to promote astrotourism at the UN. This is evidenced by the participation of its Director, Antonia Varela, in the 122nd Meeting of Affiliate Members of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), which took place from 13 to 15 November in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
In addition to having the opportunity to share the latest trends, challenges and opportunities in the tourism sector with territorial leaders from around the world, the participation of the Starlight Foundation, which has been an Affiliate Member of UN Tourism since 2015, allowed the organization to highlight its commitment to sustainable and scientific tourism and highlight its role as a pioneer in star tourism.

Within the framework of this meeting, a Networking of UN Tourism Affiliate Members was held, during which the Director of the Starlight Foundation moderated a round table on nature tourism. This forum provided an opportunity to share experiences and strengthen collaborations to position astrotourism as a key modality in the fight against light pollution and as a tool for economic development and environmental conservation. It also emphasized the need to continue to support a global vision of astronomical tourism, promoting international alliances and projects that benefit both local communities and the natural heritage of the starry sky.
In this context, it is worth highlighting the creation of the Scientific Tourism Group in 2019, led by the Starlight Foundation, which promotes the integration of science in tourism experiences and has laid the groundwork for the development of international standards in astrotourism.
Credit: UNWTOUN Tourism has been supporting the work of the Starlight Foundation for years, in particular by supporting the recent International Starlight Meetings. In addition, one of the latest milestones is the forthcoming publication of an Astrotourism Guide, endorsed by this institution, which aims to be an essential reference for destinations and entrepreneurs seeking to implement star tourism strategies. This document will focus on sustainable practices, dark sky preservation, and environmental education, consolidating astrotourism as a bridge between science, culture, and local economies.
The Starlight Foundation's commitment to UN Tourism reaffirms its position as a leader in the sector, promoting a trend that combines sustainability, science and responsible tourism.
